When you think home security several things probably pop into your mind. We are going to look at the most widely accepted ideas for securing your home from burglaries and protecting your family from home invasion and call them BEST PRACTICES. Part One and Part Two. In Part-I we cover the basics.
The list is not meant to be all-inclusive but rather a guide.
1. Think Like A Crook: This is where you start. What would the bad guys look for in picking a place to rob? What makes one property more appealing than another? Do you see the easiest ways to get into your house looking at it from the street?

2. Trees And Bushes: Are there some good hiding places around the house? Places where you won't be seen from the street and from the yard itself?
3. Use Common Sense: This may sound a little trite but most robberies occur from homeowner's lack of common sense. You are trying to secure your home from the bad guys not make it easy. Put as many obstacles in his way as possible.

4. Time, Light And Sound: The three amigos of burglar enemies. They need quiet, darkness and plenty of time. So take that away from the bad guys and all of a sudden it is not such an attractive target.
5. Signage: By this I mean simply to put up some signs around the house, in a window, out in the yard, etc. that will make the bad guys pause and give them something to think about. For example-"Vicious Guard Dog on Duty", an NRA sticker in your window, a security company sign in your front yard-you get the idea. Burglars do not want a hard target. It is your job to make it as hard as possible.
6. Doors And Windows: The front door is the usual entry point for a burglar or home invader. Make sure you have a good deadbolt on the door and some alarms on the windows. Keep doors and windows locked even when you are at home.
7. Dummy Cameras: This is something that will make potential burglars pause and think twice about targeting your home. Make them very visible and get some signage "These Premises are Under 24 Hour Surveillance" as an example.
