When you think home security several things probably pop into your mind. We are going to look at the most widely accepted ideas for securing your home from burglaries and protecting your family from home invasion and call them BEST PRACTICES. Part One and Part Two. In Part-II we cover more specifics.
The list is not meant to be all-inclusive but rather a guide.

---Use The Peephole: Next time someone rings your doorbell check yourself and see how you answer it. Most people REFLEXIVELY open the door to see who's there. I used too. That is not such a good idea. That is exactly what home invaders are counting on. Once you open the door, it is pretty much over-an intruder can just come in.
---Motion Activated Spots: These light up any area of your yard when someone is afoot. Remember that the bad guys do not like light.
---Garage Door: I have been unable to comprehend why people leave their garage door open "only a few feet" especially in the summer. I know to "let the hot air out." Great!! How about allowing someone to fence your HOT property they just took.

---Arm Your Alarms: If you have home alarms and they are not armed when you leave the home what good are they. Don't forget to "arm the alarms."
---Neighborhood Watch: If your neighborhood does not have one, start one. It is easy and doesn't cost anything. The local police or sheriff department can help. www.usaonwatch.org is a tremendous resource that can help get one going in your neighborhood.
---Non-Lethal Self Defense Weapons: In the event of a home invasion having some pepper sprays, stun guns or even a taser located in different parts of the house can make a huge difference in the outcome of a home invasion.
---Practice For Home Invasion: I know this sounds crazy. But as a family unit if you "GET SMART AND GET A PLAN" in the event of a home invasion you will be prepared. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
If you follow these BEST PRACTICES you will be in a much stronger position to secure your home against a home burglary or home invasion.
